According to the Australian Department of Home Affairs, all of Australia outside of the AustralianCapital Territory, Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast, Wollongong, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Perth is considered to be “rural and regional Australia“.
In 2011 this is how regional Australia has been described on Wikipedia:
Regional Australia is a definition of the Australian Government designed to promote some areas of the country, especially for immigration. People who complete specified work, that being plant and animal cultivation, fishing and pearling, tree farming and felling, mining, or construction, in these areas can be granted extra points when applying for a resident visa. Working there while holding a working holiday visa may allow the person to have their visa renewed.
Unfortunately in last 10 years we have seen constant decrees in support for regional Australia. Federal government and following Immigration Ministers seems to completely forgot that there is a huge and important part of Australia outside of few capital cities.
Work condition, number of people and skills pool is different in regional Australia and that have to be addresses.
For many years we have enjoy regional programs designed to attract international skilled people to start new life in areas where they are mostly needed. But in last few years those programs had been wiped off and now regional employers are facing meeting the same, constantly increasing, requirements as businesses operation in the biggest Australian cities.
